NOTE FROM KI

MEMORY BOX. A few days ago, my older brother messaged me to ask if I still had a video of our kids battling it out in their Johnny Jump Ups — from 38 years ago! I can picture it vividly. It was absolutely hysterical — and probably not the safest activity. Funny how some memories stick so clearly while others fade and blur with time.

I wish I could recall every precious moment that easily. As the years roll by, there are simply too many memories to store neatly in my mind’s filing cabinet. (Maybe camera phones will save future generations from this particular struggle.)

It’s not always the big occasions that linger. Sometimes it’s just a minute or two of pure joy — or sadness — that imprints itself forever. As an organized person, I often wish I could catalog those flashes of time, pull them up on demand and let them comfort me when I need them most.

I lost my younger brother last week. As my daughter and I sat in his hospital room, we shared stories — the funny ones, the tender ones, the ones that made us laugh through tears. In that small, quiet space, I was reminded that a life well-lived isn’t measured in milestones but in the ordinary moments that become extraordinary in memory. Those memories — simple, messy, real — are what we get to keep forever.
